The Boswell Holiday

As the snow fell on the ground, a little kitten played with the snowflakes. The funny shapes floated as the wind blew them by her. One of the snowflakes landed on her nose and she slapped at it with her white paw.

The kitten, Allison, wanted to be with her family, warm and cozy by the fire for her 1st Christmas. She wasn’t sure what all the fuss was about but Christmas must be BIG. Everyone was excited and hurrying around the house where she lived. The family was gathering firewood and food for the cold months.

Allison needed to stop playing and get into her warm bed. Dark was coming and it could get colder. She might get lost if she did not make her way home soon.

Her favorite person was Kenzie because she let the little kitten sleep in her big soft bed. There was always someone to play with, things to get into and adventures to go on. All the family, sister Haylee, cousin Preslie and all their parents and grandparents Meme and Papa Mike lived in the same town so they were visiting all the time. Everyone helped with the cleaning, and preparing food for the coming holiday.

As Allison made her way to the house, she waited for someone to open the door just wide enough for her to make a dash inside the hallway.

Ooooohhhh It was the most beautiful thing Allison had ever seen. The big tree in the center of the hallway was the tallest she had ever seen, and all the balls and tinsel made the tree glow. She quietly walked up to the tree and stared.

Allison wanted to touch and just couldn’t resist batting at anything hanging low enough. Just as she raised her paw, footsteps sounded outside of the doorway.

THUMP THUMP Papa Mike stuck his head around the doorway and saw little Allison. She scurried around to the back of the tree and as she was running on the wooden floor she started to slip and slide because the floors had just been polished that afternoon. Allison’s back paw got caught in the tinsel she had knocked down.

She tried to get away but the more she pulled, the more tangled she became. Finally she gave a tug and all of the tinsel started to fall, taking most of the Christmas decorations down.

Kenzie was just toddling into the room and saw all of the shiny stuff on the floor. She made a mad dash for Allison saying “No No” and grabbed her by the tail. Allison screeched and jumped out of Kenzie’s reach. AND THE RACE WAS ON.

Haylee, Preslie, mom Kelly, and Aunt Heather ran into the room, with Meme following. Papa Mike, dad Ben and Uncle Joey thought the sight was so funny that laughter filled the room. Poor Allison barely got away with all her fur, Kenzie was covered in tinsel, and the tree was slightly leaning to the window.

Allison ran and ran until she came into the room she slept in with Kenzie. She hid under the bed until things quieted down. Soon she heard laughter and music downstairs. So she went to the top of the stairs and watched as the family sat around the Christmas tree and sang songs and opened presents. Everyone got hugs and looked so happy. Allison was wondering if this was Christmas that all the activity was about.

After all the excitement settled down, Kenzie started rubbing her eyes because she was ready to go to bed for the night, so Allison came out of hiding. She was so tired and wanted someone to tell her that everything was alright and she wasn’t in trouble. The little girl saw the kitten waiting in the doorway of the nursery and held out her hands. Allison was so happy, she leaped into Kenzie’s arms and they snuggled down into the warm covers.

Just before dropping off to sleep, the little kitten opened her eyes, looked out the tall window and saw all the stars in the nighttime sky. The one that was brighter than all the rest seemed special.

Allison thought about the story she had heard tonight. That same bright star had shown on a dark night long, long ago to light the path of a special little boy born on the same day many years ago. As her eyes started to close, her mind was going around and around about the star, the tree downstairs and the fun she would have tomorrow, or maybe later tonight when everyone was asleep. Allison was so glad she was living with such a nice family. Kenzie was so soft and warm Allison never wanted to let go.
